The State of Hawaii
It was a great day for Hawaii on August 21, 1959 when this chain of islands became the 50th state in the United States of America. Since it has only been a sate for 50 years, many still do not know much about this land of paradise.
Honing in on 10,932 square miles, Hawaii is the 43rd largest state in the United States in size and as of the 2000 census has 1,211,537 ranking as the 8th smallest state.
Known as the Aloha State, the major industries in Hawaii is tourism and agriculture. While Hawaii is not known as a boon to agriculture as the Midwest, they are the primary growers of bananas, pineapples, macadamia nuts and taro.
Citizens of Hawaii are called Hawaiians, and one of the most notable Hawaiians is the 44th President Barack Obama who was born in Honolulu in 1961.
Every state has a state song, and Hawaii is no different with the song Hawaii Ponoi meaning Hawaii’s Own. The official State Flower of Hawaii is the Hibiscus which is locally known as Pua aloalo.
Hawaii is a beautiful state and is known the country over for its state tree Kukui which is known on the mainland as the candlenut tree. Hawaii is the owner of two state animals, the State Bird is the Nene which is the Hawaiian Goose, and the State Mammal Monk Seal.
